Hansa Creation Soft Toys — lifelike plush animals made by hand
Hans Axthelm founded Hansa Creation in Australia in 1972 with one clear idea: plush animals should look like the real thing. What began as a small workshop has grown into a company with over 7,000 species in its range — from a tiny field mouse to a life-sized giraffe. Since 1994, production has been based in the Philippines, where an experienced team of artisans crafts every single item by hand.
Handmade, not mass-produced
There is no stamping machine at Hansa Creation churning out hundreds of identical parts. Instead, skilled workers cut each fabric piece individually — roughly 42 pieces per animal on average. Sewing follows the inside-out method: all seams sit on the inside and become invisible once the toy is turned. Only then does the airbrush work begin. Shading around the head, darker patches along the back, lighter accents on the paws — these details are what distinguish a Hansa soft toy from an ordinary stuffed animal. Eyes, claws and whiskers are selected from a pool of over 6,000 different components to match each species.
What is inside?
Since 2011, the filling in every Hansa toy has been made entirely from fibres derived from recycled PET bottles. The outer shells use specially developed synthetic furs that vary in length, density and texture depending on the species — a polar bear feels quite different from a frog. All materials are laboratory-tested and comply with the European EN 71 toy safety standard.
A gift that makes an impression
Anyone who gives a Hansa soft toy soon notices: the reaction is different from that of a conventional plush animal. Adults look more closely and recognise the craftsmanship. Children reach for it immediately because the animal looks real. Collectors appreciate that each piece is effectively one of a kind — two examples of the same species may look similar but are never identical, thanks to the handmade process. The animals also work well as decorative pieces in living rooms, offices or waiting rooms.
Realistic soft toys in education and therapy
Nurseries and schools use Hansa soft toys to teach children about animals and habitats during lessons or circle time. The lifelike design helps children identify features of different species: does the animal have claws or hooves? Is its tail long or short? In occupational therapy, speech therapy and elderly care, professionals use the animals as conversation starters. A realistic-looking creature can unlock memories and build connections where words alone may not be enough.
Care instructions
Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, then allow the fur to dry and brush gently if needed. Avoid machine washing — the airbrushed paintwork and the toy's shape may suffer.
