The Spitz is one of the oldest dog breeds in Europe. Its ancestors, the peat bog dogs, can be traced back to the Stone Age. Spitz-type dogs come in various sizes — from the Pomeranian at around 20 centimetres shoulder height to the Keeshond at over 45 centimetres. All variants share the dense double coat with its lavish mane and an alert, lively temperament. Spitz dogs are watchful, vocal and deeply attached to their owner. Despite their size, the smaller varieties were long used as watchdogs because they reliably announce every visitor.

Did you know that the Pomeranian takes its international name from the Pomerania region on the Baltic coast? The breed was not actually developed there — the dogs merely passed through Pomerania on their way to England, where Queen Victoria fell in love with the breed and through selective breeding reduced it to its present miniature form. Before her time, Spitz dogs were considerably larger.
