The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is a primate from the lemur group and lives exclusively on Madagascar. With a head-to-body length of 39 to 46 centimetres and a weight of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 kilogrammes, it is a medium-sized member of its family. Its most distinctive feature is the tail, which can reach 62 centimetres in length and carries the characteristic black and white rings. Unlike most lemurs, the ring-tailed lemur spends much of its time on the ground and is mainly active during the day. They live in groups of around 13 to 15 individuals led by a dominant female — a rarity among primates, where males usually take the lead.

Did you know that ring-tailed lemurs are dedicated sunbathers? Each morning they sit upright, stretch their arms out to the sides and warm themselves with their bellies facing the sun — almost like a yoga pose. There is a practical reason behind this behaviour: the cool nights on Madagascar lower their body temperature, and the morning sun bath gets their circulation going before the group sets off to forage.
